September 26, 2023
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

OTTAWA, ON – This week Arnold Viersen, MP for Peace River – Westlock, was reappointed to the Standing Committee on Indigenous and Northern Affairs.

Over the past two years, MP Viersen served as the Vice-Chair for the Subcommittee on
International Human Rights. Prior to that, from 2015 to 2021, MP Viersen was a
Member of the Standing Committee on Indigenous and Northern Affairs.

“It’s great to be back on the Indigenous and Northern Affairs Committee (INAN). As an
MP representing a large rural riding with 14 First Nation and 3 Metis Settlements, this
an important opportunity to represent the interests of northern Canadians,” says MP
Viersen.

“I have been honoured to spend the past two years on the International Human Rights
Committee advocating for protection of inalienable rights of many vulnerable
populations around the world. In particular, the crisis in Ethiopia and the persecution of
Christians in Nigeria,” added MP Viersen.

This afternoon, the Standing Committee on Indigenous and Northern Affairs met to
appoint Liberal MP John Aldag as Committee Chair.

Up first this fall on the INAN Committee agenda is reviewing Bill C-53, An Act respecting
the recognition of certain Métis governments, to give effect to treaties with those
governments.

“The Liberal government has been stalling on this file for several years. Conservatives
will do our jobs and give this legislation the attention and careful consideration it
deserves. We support a consultation process that includes all affected Métis and First
Nations,” said MP Viersen.
