Conservatives Block Liberal Budget

June 5, 2023
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

OTTAWA, ON: Today, Pierre Poilievre, Leader of the Conservative Party of Canada, announced that the Official Opposition will use every tool at its means to block the Liberal Budget, which is being debated throughout the week in the House of Commons. The Liberal Government needs to pass it before the House of Commons rises for the summer.

“Budget 2023 adds a staggering $60 billion in new spending – that is $4,200 per family, meaning more inflation, more taxes, and higher costs,” says MP Arnold Viersen. “Canadians can’t afford Justin Trudeau’s inflationary deficits. The more he spends, the more things cost.

“The Liberals also introduced a hidden 2nd carbon tax in their budget that will drive carbon taxes up to 61 cents per litre, further hiking the price of gas, heat and groceries. It is a tax on a tax.

“Alberta will be one of the hardest hit provinces by these dual carbon taxes, costing the average Albertan family $3,930 by 2030. Families can’t afford to pay for Trudeau’s inflationary spending.

“That is why we will stand up for struggling families and small businesses and do our part to stop Justin Trudeau’s out of control inflationary spending unless the Liberals commit to a plan to end inflationary deficits and spending to bring down inflation and interest rates and cancel all carbon tax hikes.”

“We won’t only vote against Budget 2023, we are blocking it with every tool we have, including:

  • Tabling 904 amendments in the House of Commons.
  • Putting forward 23 amendments on the budget at committee.
  • Forcing over 600 recorded votes at Finance Committee.
  • Forcing the Liberals to use time allocation at the second reading of the bill in the House of Commons because every Conservative MP wanted to speak.

“Only Conservatives will bring home powerful paycheques and lower prices.”
