MP Viersen Congratulates on Constituent on Medal of Bravery Award

Ottawa, ON —  Arnold Viersen, MP for Peace River – Westlock, attended the Governor General’s Decorations for Bravery ceremony to witness Myles Brown, a constituent from Slave Lake, receive the Medal of Bravery, which recognizes acts of bravery in hazardous circumstances.

“While Myles would suggest he is just a regular Albertan who loves his job, he really is an incredibly brave guy. Despite downplaying his role in the events, the fact is, he and Chad Lyttle wasted no time tackling a full size cougar to save the life of their colleague. She is alive today due to their courage and quick action.”

“I want to extend my congratulations to Myles on receiving the Medal of Bravery from the Governor General. I was honoured to attend the ceremony today and thank him personally for his courageous actions.”

Myles Brown and Chad Lyttle’s citation reads:

On August 5, 2014, biologists Myles Brown and Chad Lyttle risked their lives to protect a colleague who was being attacked by a cougar at a research camp near Grande Prairie, Alberta. Responding to the victim’s cries, they found her being dragged into the bushes by the wild animal. Without any equipment at hand, Mr. Brown ran at the cougar to kick it off the victim. Both men managed to keep the cougar away while they provided first aid to the victim. With the help of other colleagues who had arrived at the scene, they secured the perimeter against the still-prowling wild cat until help arrived.
