Spring Parliamentary Session Wrap-up
September 27, 2024
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Barrhead, AB — Member of Parliament for Peace River – Westlock, Arnold Viersen released the following update on the spring session of Parliament:
After nine years of Justin Trudeau, Canadians are struggling. The Liberal-NDP government continues to pour fuel on the inflationary fire with $60 billion in new inflationary spending, keeping inflation and interest rates high. Justin Trudeau’s economic vandalism has meant that Canadians are getting poorer as productivity and GDP per Capita both decline.
Justin Trudeau and Jagmeet Singh also continue to ignore the crime and chaos on our streets, letting dangerous, repeat, violent offenders out on bail and funding dangerous drugs with taxpayer dollars.
Over the past 6 months, Conservatives have been fighting hard in Parliament to hold the coalition accountable and bring home common sense. I am proud of the wins that Conservatives have secured for Canadian including:
- Exposing historic corruption and called in the auditors to investigate Liberal corruption in the ArriveCan, McKinsey, and Green Slush Fund Scandals.
- Forcing the Information Commissioner, Privacy Commissioner, Public Sector Integrity Commissioner, and two committees to investigate the Liberal’s $60 billion ArriveCan scandal.
- Passing a motion that would send all the files on the Liberal’s green slush fund to the RCMP.
- Pushing the government to finally take action on rising carjackings, auto theft, and extortion.
- Forcing Trudeau and Guilbeault to admit that their own report shows that the carbon tax is hurting Canadians.
- Forcing the Liberal government to take foreign interference seriously by finally setting up the ongoing public inquiry and forcing the government to act on a foreign influence registry.
Common sense Conservatives advanced legislation to protect legislation including:
- Passing my Bill C-270 at 2nd reading to end internet sexual exploitation – it now moves to Committee.
- Passing Bill C-320 at 3rd reading to promote transparency and rights for victims of violent crime.
- Passing Bill C-321 at 3rd reading to support and protect first responders and health care workers who face violence while serving our communities.:
Conservatives also introduced the following Bills:
- Bill C-379 to provide tougher penalties for repeat car thieves.
- Bill C-378 to help victims of workplace harassment.
- Bill C-381 to protect Canadians from becoming victims of extortion.
- Bill C-351 to keep serial killers in maximum security prison.
- Bill C-376 to prohibits violent criminals from owning weapons.
- Bill C-370 to protect victims of serious crimes – a bill I introduced last fall.
- Bill C-364 to enact harsher penalties for perpetrators of rural crime.
- Bill C-407 to include a national livestock brand as one of Canada’s national symbols
- Bill C-409 to recognize Campgrounds As Small Businesses
Within Parliament, I continue to represent the interests of the people of Peace River – Westlock and uphold our Canadian values. Over the past spring session, I have cast 240 votes, regularly engaged in debate in the House of Commons on Government and private members legislation and worked with colleagues on Committees to hold the government to account.
Many of the issues that I have spoken on included:
- Ending deficits, reducing inflation, and making life more affordable
- Protecting Canadians from the surge in crime
- Standing up for the rights of hunters and sports shooters
- Fighting for oil and gas workers
Over the summer, I look forward to meeting with and talking to constituents across the riding to hear their concerns about the issues that affect them most so that come this fall, we are ready to hold the NDP/Liberal Coalition to account.
Common Sense Conservatives will never stop fighting for Canadians. Let’s bring it home.
