No Lifetime Pension for Julie Payette: Viersen calls on Justin Trudeau to fix his mistake

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
April 14, 2021

Barrhead AB: Conservative Member of Parliament for Peace River – Westlock, Arnold Viersen, is inviting the public to sign a petition to stop the financial benefits granted to the former Governor General of Canada, Julie Payette.

“This petition aims to put pressure on Justin Trudeau to fix the fiasco he himself created by appointing Ms. Payette and leaving her in office until she resigns. I salute the work of Senator Claude Carignan, who initiated this important petition,” explained MP Viersen.

Forced to resign after creating a toxic work environment in her office, Ms. Payette can currently still receive a lifetime pension of $150,000 per year as well as an annual allowance of $206,400 for representational expenses and hiring staff. Conservative MP Luc Berthold has agreed to sponsor the e-petition on the House of Commons website.

“Citizens are rightly outraged, and it is time to tell Prime Minister Trudeau directly. He is the one responsible for this fiasco! Senator Carignan’s Bill S-232 must be adopted as quickly as possible. When you quit your job, you are not entitled to employment insurance. Why is Julie Payette entitled to a lifetime pension? I invite all those who are as shocked as we are by this unacceptable situation to sign and share this petition,” said MP Luc Berthold.

The petition firmly calls on the Liberal government to withdraw the benefits of any Governor General who has not completed five consecutive years in office, unless they resign for health reasons. The petition can be signed at the following address: Petition e-3314 – Petitions (ourcommons.ca)
