MP Viersen: Remembrance Day Column
November 3, 2022
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Ottawa, ON – Remembrance Day is a time to pause and remember the service and sacrifices made by Canada’s men and women in uniform during times of war, conflict and peace that have helped define and shape our country.
As a Canadian Member of Parliament of Dutch descent, Remembrance Day evokes both a great pride in Canada’s historic role and a deep gratitude for the Canadian soldiers who liberated my grandparents.
During the 75th anniversary of the liberation of the Netherlands by Canada, I asked my grandmother about her memories of this historic moment in Dutch history. She joyfully recounted hearing as a child the excited shouts from villagers: “The Canadians are coming. The Canadians are on their way!”
Indeed, throughout our country’s history, Canadian soldiers have bravely fought tyranny and evil around the world, defending our country, our values and our way of life. From WWI & WWII, to the Korean War to Afghanistan to the fight against ISIS and everything in between.
This Remembrance Day, please join me in extending a heartfelt thank you to Canada’s Veterans and those serving today. May we be eternally grateful for Canada’s veterans who at great personal cost defend our freedoms.
Lest we forget.
