Letter to the Editor: NDP/Liberal Hard Drug Experiments Has Tragic Consequences

November 13, 2024
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Dear editor,

Last month, an Alberta’s Law Enforcement Response Team executed a warrant at a location outside Valleyview and discovered an alleged fentanyl superlab. It took four days for ALERT to dismantle the lab which had been producing fentanyl for years. I want to thank ALERT and their partners on this including the Greenview County Fire and EMS. This is dangerous and difficult work.

During the process of their investigation, ALERT discovered and seized 7 kilograms of processed fentanyl. A lethal dose of fentanyl can be as little as 2 mg. This means that the 7 kilograms of fentanyl had the potential of taking 3.5 million lives through overdoses or exposure. To put this into perspective, that’s most of the population of Alberta.

This is one more example of how after nine years, the NDP-Liberal Government’s radical experiments of hard drug legalization and taxpayer-funded free drugs have been a disaster. Recently, the Chief of London Police Service explained that, “diverted safe supply is being resold into our community, it’s being trafficked into other communities, and it is being used as currency in exchange for fentanyl, fueling the drug trade.” This is happening across the country.

The NDP-Liberal government must finally accept that its experiment of taxpayer-funded hard drugs has failed. Since 2015, over 42,000 Canadians have died from drug overdoses, including children. One of these children was Brianna MacDonald, who died of an overdose in a homeless encampment in Abbotsford, British Columbia. She died only a month after her thirteenth birthday. Each of these lives lost has left a deep wound in the families and friends of those who loved them.

As the Member of Parliament for Peace River – Westlock, I am committed to ending the devastation that safe supply and the legalization of hard drugs has had on our communities. A Conservative Government will put an end to taxpayer-funded hard drugs, ban them, and invest in treatment and recovery to bring home our loved ones drug free.

Arnold Viersen, MP
