Letter to Editor: Province Of Alberta Is Right To Challenge Trudeau’s Carbon Tax In Court

Dear Editor, 

After nine years, the NDP-Liberal carbon tax has driven up the cost of everything. Families are having to pay $700 more for food this year, forcing food banks to handle a record 2,059,636 visits in March 2024 alone. In Alberta, the carbon tax will cost the average household $697 more than they get back in rebates. 

For this reason, I fully support Premier Danielle Smith’s announcement that Alberta will relaunch a legal challenge to the NDP-Liberal carbon tax, proving once again that Trudeau’s carbon tax is nothing more than an expensive scam. This is in response to last fall’s announcement that the Liberal government was creating an unequal situation across the country by carving out heating oils to grant an exemption to certain Liberal voters. Trudeau Cabinet Minister Gudie Hutchings even said that if other areas of the country wanted a similar carveout, “perhaps they need to elect more Liberals.”  

As the Parliamentary Budget Officer confirmed earlier this fall, Canadians will suffer a “net cost,” paying more in the carbon tax than they will ever get back in rebates. Yet, instead of listening to Canadians during this cost-of-living crisis, Trudeau decided to hike his carbon tax by 23 percent earlier this spring, as part of his plan to quadruple the carbon tax by 2030. On top of this, the Fraser Institute has also reported that Trudeau’s carbon tax will cost the average Canadian worker $6,700 by 2030.  

Instead of quadrupling the carbon tax on the backs of working Canadians, Justin Trudeau should give Canadians the opportunity to vote in a carbon tax election. Canadians need a government that will axe the tax and bring home lower prices for Canadians. 

Common Sense Conservatives will always stand with any provincial government that wants to give their residents the relief they deserve.
