Letter to Editor: Conservatives Will Bring Home Safe Communities

October 24, 2024 – FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Dear Editor

This summer, the Liberal government’s own data showed that after nine years of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, violent crime has increased 50%, murder is up by 28%, sexual assaults are up 75%, and extortion is up a shocking 357%.

Another issue affecting every community in Canada is auto theft and this is up 46%. Even the Justice Minister’s own car has been stolen three times!

All of this would have been preventable had the Liberals listened to Conservatives, experts, and law enforcement. We called on them to abandon their catch-and-release bail policies in Bill C-75 and their elimination of mandatory minimum sentences for certain major crimes in Bill C-5. Today, Liberal policies have ensured that violent criminals are out of jail and into Canadian communities sooner.

For nine years, the NDP and Liberals have also been targeting law-abiding firearms owners, Indigenous hunters, and sport shooters. Meanwhile gun crimes and gang murders have skyrocketed. In fact, violent gun crime is up 116%.

So when Justin Trudeau attempted to brag this week about banning firearms from law-abiding firearms owners, multiple law enforcement associations called him out. The Toronto Police Association said to the Prime Minister: “Criminals did not get your message…. Your statement is out of touch and offensive to victims of crime and police officers everywhere. Whatever you think you’ve done to improve community safety, has not worked.”

Common Sense Conservatives will ensure that repeat violent offenders remain behind bars while awaiting trial and restore mandatory jail time for serious violent crimes that were repealed by the Liberals. Conservatives believe in jail, not bail, for repeat violent offenders.

Every Canadian should feel safe in their home and community. A Common Sense Conservative government will end the crime and chaos, and bring home safe streets.
