Barrhead, AB: MP Arnold Viersen issued the following statement after the government of Alberta announced funding for Zolgensma, a US$2.125 million gene replacement therapy treatment for children suffering from spinal muscular atrophy (SMA):
“This is a huge win for Mighty Max, a 2-year-old boy with spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) who lives in the riding of Peace River – Westlock.
“I want to congratulate Max and his parents. As a father, I am thrilled for Max’s parents. This treatment will allow Max to enjoy a quality of life that would have been impossible without it.
“That over $900,000 has already been raised towards Max’s treatment speaks to our Albertan values of community, hard work and generosity. It has been incredible to see the support Max has received from the whole community that has rallied around him, raised awareness, bought donuts, made phone calls, and sent emails.
“On January 11, Max’s 2nd birthday, I was pleased to write a letter to Minister Shandro and add my voice to those who have been relentlessly working to support Max and his parents.
“I want to thank Minister Shandro and the Alberta government for addressing this in a timely manner and making this much-needed treatment be available to those who need it.”
