Conservatives Halt Bill C-10: The Liberal Attack on Freedom of Speech

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

May 12th, 2021

Barrhead, AB: The Conservative Party of Canada continues to oppose Bill C-10 and the threat to free speech that it poses. The Liberal government claims this Bill was originally intended to level the playing field between streaming services and Canadian broadcasters. However, the Liberals amended Bill C-10 so that social media posts could be censored by the government.

Former CRTC commissioner Peter Menzies said Bill C-10 “doesn’t just infringe on free expression, it constitutes a full-blown assault upon it and, through it, the foundations of democracy.”

The Liberals promised to fix their censorship bill, Bill C-10. However last week, during the Heritage committee, the latest Liberal amendment failed to address censorship concerns.

“Bill C-10 is another unacceptable attempt by the Liberals to target the freedoms of individual internet users in Canada,” said Peace River – Westlock MP Arnold Viersen. “As your Member of Parliament, I will stand up for the rights of Canadians to speak their mind. Bill C-10 is a serious threat to our freedom of speech and it must be withdrawn.

“Due to weeks of public outcry from people across Canada, the Conservative Party was able to force the Liberals to halt Bill C-10 until it has been reviewed for its constitutionality. This is a huge win for the freedom of speech.

“Conservatives will continue to stand up for the freedoms of Canadians who post their content online and oppose C-10 at every stage of the legislative process.”
