Stopping the Costly Coalition’s Plan to Triple Carbon Tax and Spend More

October 14, 2022
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

By Arnold Viersen, MP for Peace River – Westlock

Day after day, I hear from constituents who are struggling to make ends meet and keep food on the table.

Mike, a senior on a limited pension, shared that over the past year his rent has increased by 50%, his fuel costs are up 40%, his medications are up 22%, and food costs are up 12%. Like many rural Albertans, Mike is struggling with the burden inflation and this government’s taxes on basic necessities.

There are two key factors for this: skyrocketing inflation and rising taxes. Both are a direct consequence of the costly coalition.

The more Prime Minister Trudeau spends, the more things will cost. It’s Justin-Flation. This uncontrolled spending, supported by the NDP is fueling inflation and higher prices, making it harder for workers, families and seniors to make ends meet.

The NDP/Liberal Coalition’s response to the inflation crisis we are facing: Spend even more money. They have introduced massive spending bills in Parliament that prints more cash, borrows more money, and throws gasoline on the inflationary fire the Prime Minister started.

And it’s not like they haven’t been forewarned.  For three years, Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre relentlessly predicted that out-of-control spending would continue to put enormous upward pressure on inflation and interest rates.

Financial experts also agree. In response to the NDP/Liberal Coalition’s latest spending bill, senior economist Robert Kavcic at Bank of Montreal stated: “…we all know that sending out money as an inflation-support measure is inherently inflationary.”

Albertans are also facing a carbon tax on gas, heat and groceries that will triple over the next few years and payroll tax hikes planned for January 1st. These hikes are coming at the worst possible time for Canadian families. If Trudeau was serious about making life more affordable for workers, families and seniors, he immediately would cancel all planned tax increases and scrap the carbon tax altogether.

Enough is enough.

My Conservative colleagues and I have a plan to take on Justinflation, fight the costly coalition’s tax hikes and tackle the cost-of-living crisis.

A Conservative government would:

  • Cap government spending with a Pay-As-You-Go Law requiring the government find a dollar of savings for each new dollar of spending;
  • Axe the carbon tax and payroll tax hikes to strengthen paycheques and lower energy prices; and
  • Remove red tape and gatekeepers to allow businesses, farmers and workers to produce more affordable energy, food and housing.

Together, we will ensure Canadians benefit from the fruits of their labour, so they can take back control of their lives here in Canada, the freest country on earth.

Canada needs a Prime Minister who hears them and offers them hope. Pierre Poilievre will be a Prime Minister who rekindles hope for all Canadians. Hope that they can again afford to buy a home, pay their bills, afford food, earn powerful paycheques and savings, and enjoy a secure retirement – free from inflation and over-taxation.
