Conservative Motion Calling On Trudeau To Meet With Premiers On Carbon Tax Passes
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
April 11, 2024
OTTAWA, ON – Yesterday, the House of Commons adopted a Conservative motion that directs
the Prime Minister to publicly meet with the Premiers regarding the Carbon Tax within five weeks.
The Motion passed with the support of the NDP and Bloc parties.
The Motion stated:
That the House note:
(a) that the federal carbon tax is causing a debate in the country; and
(b) that, while Quebec, British Columbia and the Northwest Territories already have their own systems in place, the federal government mandates carbon tax policy; that the House call on the Prime Minister to convene an emergency carbon tax and tarification meeting with all of Canada’s 14 first ministers; and that this meeting be publicly televised and held within five weeks of this motion being adopted.
“The Prime Minister admitted that the last time he met with premiers about the carbon tax was in 2016 – eight years ago,” says MP Viersen. “Since then, the carbon tax has been wreaking havoc on the finances of Canadians and our economy.”
“Yesterday Parliament sent a clear message to the Prime Minister, directing him to listen to 70% of Canadians and 70% of provincial premiers opposed to the carbon tax. The big question that remains is, will he listen to Parliament?
“My colleagues and I continue to fight the carbon tax in the House of Commons at every opportunity. In fact, this week, I raised the impact the carbon tax is having on farmers and young families in our communities, leading to increased visits to food banks.
“When we tax the farmer who grows the food, tax the truckers that deliver the food and tax the person who sells the food, Canadians cannot afford to buy the food. Very soon, a 5,000-acre farm in Canada will be paying $150,000 a year in carbon taxes.
“The carbon tax is stopping Canadians from being able to afford to live. It’s time to axe the tax.”
