2023 New Years Message

Dear constituents,

Happy New Year!

As 2022 ends, I am pleased to share an update. It is an honour to serve as your voice in Ottawa.

This past year, I focused on being a voice for northern Albertans, standing up for our workers, seniors, families, and victims of crime. I also received over 3100 replies to newsletter surveys I send helping me represent you better in Parliament. Thank you!

In 2022, I spoke over 270 times in the House of Commons on matters important to you including oil and gas, forestry, helping small business owners, protecting kids from internet pornography, rights of firearm owners, Indigenous rights, human trafficking, and freedom of conscience. I also presented over 110 petitions signed by constituents advocating for action on sex-selective abortion, ALS research, northern residents’ deduction, the treatment of Uyghur Muslims by Communist China, and ending Covid mandates.

I continue to assist constituents with federal office issues. This past fall alone, we helped over 40 families get their passports, and in one case, helped a father to walk his daughter down the aisle.

We also helped with immigration files, reuniting family members, and ensuring farmers and small businesses can hire skilled workers. We help with Service Canada challenges, and in one case, ensured a mother received maternity benefits after she was denied simply because her husband is a farmer. Finally, as a rural riding, we work hard to ensure constituents can get their PAL renewals.

I now serve on the Subcommittee on International Human Rights as Vice-Chair. Human rights are given to all because we are created in God’s image. We must ensure they are protected and upheld. The Subcommittee has been studying human rights atrocities taking place in Tigray, Ethiopia, Ukraine, and Iran. I have advocated for studies on modern slavery that is fueled by the growing demand for green technology, and the alarming increase of religious persecution of Christians in Nigeria.

Continuing my fight against sexual exploitation and human trafficking, I introduced the SISE Act (Stopping Internet Sexual Exploitation Act) requiring pornography companies to verify age and consent before publishing content. In November, I tabled the National Strategy to Combat Human Trafficking Act. I continue to service as co-chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group to End Modern Slavery and Human Trafficking.

I look forward to serving you in 2023. As always, please don’t hesitate to contact me with your thoughts and concerns.

Sincerely,

Arnold Viersen, MP
